Light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor device that converts electricity to light by the movement of electrons. A small amount of heat is released but these are cool enough to touch. LEDs do not spread light and energy, instead they are more energy efficient and more light efficient than incandescent or fluorescent lights. These are not used as general ambience lighting. They are used for task lighting, architectural lighting, medical lighting, transportation lighting, entertainment lighting, signs and signals etc. A LED driver regulates the power supplied to LED lighting. These respond to changes in power requirements to supply the right amount of power. Here are some of the reasons why LED lighting is more advantageous over normal lighting.
- Energy efficiency- perhaps one of the most beneficial things about LED lighting is its low amounts of energy loss as heat. These are cool burning devices unlike the traditional which emit more heat than light.
- Life span- LEDs have a longer life span than incandescent or fluorescent lights. An estimated life of 100,000 hours can be obtained from LED lights giving them a longer life.
- Durability- these can withstand all kinds of weathers and impacts. They are water resistant, heat resistant and shock resistant. LEDs are great for rugged use.
- Unlimited colours- these have a range of colour, dramatic combinations, colour changing effects and white light, which could also be produced through mixing red, blue and green lights. There are variable-intensity LEDs that provide more than 16.7 million colours.
- No UV emission- these do not emit UV radiation, therefore making them ideal to illuminate UV sensitive objects. This also prevents the attraction of bugs and other creatures.
- Cool to touch- these produce low amounts of heat allowing them to be handled with bare hands.
- Small size allows larger design flexibility- the small circuit produces little light but these can be used for the tiniest designs and gadgets.
- Low voltage- LED lighting does not take up high voltage, thereby saving consumption of electricity.
- Toxins- these do not contain mercury or other toxins.
